The Best Type of Individual Health Insurance For You

Which Is The Best Type of Individual Health Insurance?

Best Health Insurance

There is never one right answer for every family in every town, city, or rural location. If you can bear with us for a moment, you will see why. The choice you face is to consider the medical coverage, providers who accept the policy, and your own budget. Then you can find the best major medical plan for you and your family.

This may sound complicated, but we have some ways to take a lot of the work out of the job of shoppng for the best individual health insurance. First consider some things about major medical policies.

Insurance is largely regulated at the state level. But plans, and premiums, will vary by state, county, and even by zip code! So this means that the choice your brother in Austin loves may not work for you if you live in San Antonio or Houston or Dallas. You need to find local health insurance providers.

Can You Acccess The Medical Plan’s Network Of Medical Service Providers?

Beyond that, some major medical plans, like PPOs and HMOs, rely on a network. If you live in an area with a lot of network providers, this is likely to work out well for you. But for some people, perhaps in a smaller town or rural area, without a lot of network medical services, this may not work at all. You may be happy with a PPO because it allows you to leave the network if you accept higher costs, or you may be happier with a major medical plan that does not rely on a network at all.

Before you buy a health plan, be sure you are happy with the network medical providers. Is your current doctor on the plan? If not, can you still access him or her at a slightly higher cost? What about area hospitals or emergency rooms? These are all important issues.

Many large HMO or PPO plans provide great services to people in all sorts of areas. But we have also known consumers who are very dissatisfied with their policy because they could not find local network providers, or because their current doctors, etc., would not accept the insurance!

Consider Your Budget For Individual Health Insurance Premiums

Of course, if the premiums are so high you end up dropping the policy, it will not do you much good. You can adjust the deductibles and copays to raise or lower your premiums. If a $1,500 yearly deductible and a $10 copay is too expensive, then you could see if a $2,500 yearly deductible and a $40 doctor’s office copay is a lot more affordable.

Maybe you could just drop the doctor’s office copay. Most of us would be better off by paing more for a doctor’s visit, and paying less every month. That is not true for everybody, but it is something to consider since the doctor’s copay is expensive, and it often does not cover any testing, but just the doctor’s visit!
